Support Groups

Many people with lymphoedema have no contact with others who have the condition and as a result feel ‘different’ and isolated. A support group offers a safe place for a gathering of people living with lymphoedema, their carers and loved ones, where they can share experiences, vent anger, sorrow etc., as well as cultivate a positive fighting attitude.

By providing information and reassurance that lymphoedema can be managed, the support groups can help by alleviating feelings of helplessness. Information will be supplied on such issues as: understanding what lymphoedema is and what it means to have the condition; principles of management and details of current methods of treatment and control; the availability of compression garments; as well as other related educational topics.

The format of the groups includes presentation of an education topic, time for questions, discussion, informal sharing and a meditation practice. Education topics may vary at each group location depending on the specific needs described by those in attendance.
